Five Awards to Malaysian labels printed on a GIDUE press
Turate, December the 4th 2007 – The aim of the annual Australian Flexographic Association Technical Forum and of the Asian Flexo and Gravure Print Excellence Awards is to look for and award prizes to any printed product featuring processes, equipment or application able to make a significant contribution to the development of flexo technology.
This year, five awards went to Mega Labels & Stickers sdn. bhd., a subsidiary of PCCS Group Berhad, a garment manufacturer and public-listed company in Malaysia. The printing business of Mega Labels, established in 1989, saw, in the beginning the supply of labels to the textile industry and soon grew to the electronics and consumer industry. These became their core business since most garment manufacturers have since moved out of Malaysia, a country that once used to be the hub for the clothing sector.
“In Malaysia there is still a remarkable growth, though not an explosive one, in the printing and converting industry. This leads to a very competitive climate, and converters are therefore required to find ways to bring down the costs for the benefit of their customers,” explains Mr. Lim, Senior Manager Business Development & Projects in Mega Labels.
Mr. Lim sees the future perspectives moving in two different directions. If, on the one hand, customers continue to look for cheaper and cost effective labels – to lower their overall product cost in order to reach a wider customer base, - on the other hand there will be customers looking for high quality products showing the so-called ‘no label look’. In this case the demand for high-quality and shelf-appealing products, such as in-mould labels and shrink sleeves, will push an increasing number of brand owners to enhance their packaging in order to achieve better brand image.
Handling the letterpress, silkscreen and flexographic printing processes, Mega Labels responds to its Asian customers’ requirements. They are very particular about details and are likely to reject labels which do not comply with a very high standard. “This poses a great challenge to us because we need to reduce the tolerance gap found in printing,” comments Mr. Lim. This was a challenge Mega Labels wanted to face adding to its machine portfolio a GIDUE E-Combat™ purchased in 2006.
Their choice was a totally servo-driven tension control press able to produce creative solutions both for the added-value labels and packaging industries. The E-Combat™ allows pre-register and register opportunities, fundamental to gain superior and consistent print quality, therefore to accomplish with the most exigent customers’ needs.
Mega Labels was able to win four awards this year, including a Gold Award, a Bronze and a Highly Commended awards and The Best of Show, during last AFTA Show, that took place in August 2007 at the fabulous Sea World Resort. During the 5th Asian Flexo and Gravure 2007 Print Excellence Award in Singapore on November 23. Mega Labels received a Gold Medal affirming, once again, their commitment in the production and delivery of high quality labels.
